Competition intensified in the bid for Eastern Africa to secure the position of chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) as a third contender entered the fray on Tuesday.

Djibouti put forward their Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Youssouf, as their nominee, affirming their belief that he is the most suitable candidate for the position.

The alternate contender is Fawzia Yusuf, who previously served as Somalia’s deputy prime minister and presently holds a position in the Federal Parliament.

Up to this point, Odinga has garnered support from eight heads of state, including Kenya’s William Ruto, Rwanda’s Paul Kagame, and Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni.

Other leaders, according to Odinga, include; “Mama Suluhu has said she will support me, Salva Kiir has accepted. The other day I was with Ramaphosa, and he said yes, Tshisekedi has said yes.”

Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has also endorsed the Kenyan firebrand.
