One person injured in an explosion on an oil ship in Mombasa

One person was injured on Tuesday in an explosion inside an oil ship docked near the African Marine Terminal in Liwatoni, Likoni.

The loud bang, which sent shockwaves to buildings up to two kilometres away, caused a fire that damaged parts of the vessel, christened East Wind II.

Mombasa locals felt tremors on Tuesday due to a ship explosion near the African Marine Terminal in Liwatoni, Likoni, located in Mombasa County.

Information suggests that the oil tanker was in the process of being fixed when the explosion happened.

The strong blast allegedly made structures in Mombasa Town shake, leading people living there and business proprietors in the vibrant urban center to capture videos and document the incident on various social media channels.

The ship now known as the East Wind II sustained partial damage due to certain sections being impacted by the explosion.

At the time this article was published, the fire department was still actively conducting rescue operations at the Kenya Ports Authority.

Police reports have also stated that inquiries into the explosion’s cause have commenced.

Pictures from PoliticalPulseChat show extensive smoke clouds rising into the sky following the explosion, as documented by residents in the vicinity.

According to information from the Petroleum Outlets Association of Kenya (POAK) communicated through a statement, it has been reported by PoliticalPulseChat that the fire has been successfully controlled.

Periodically, the seaside town of Mombasa faces various unfortunate events due to its nearness to the ocean.

In 2021, narrowly avoiding a fatal outcome, two passengers on a bus narrowly escaped death when the bus slid off the MV Jambo ferry. In contrast, in 2019, a tragic incident resulted in the loss of a woman and her daughter when the vehicle they were in slid off the ferry and plunged into the ocean, claiming their lives.

Elsewhere, on December 25th, there was an update regarding the four fishermen who went missing in Malindi back in November. It was reported that three of them were found alive aboard a foreign fishing vessel. Unfortunately, one of the fishermen had passed away.

As per the Kenya Coast Guard Service, the fishermen who were lost after their boat, Jodari, overturned in the open sea on November 30th were saved by a foreign ship.
