ODM Supporter Nuru Okanga Detained for 5 Days Over TikTok & YouTube Posts: Understanding the Case

Nuru Okanga, a prominent supporter of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has been sentenced to five days in jail due to remarks he made on social media.

On June 11, Okanga was apprehended at his residence in Kayole during a law enforcement operation. Subsequently, he was transported to the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road for questioning.

He faces allegations of managing suspicious accounts that posted content deemed detrimental to national interests.

Virginia Kariuki, representing the prosecution, highlighted that the contentious comments were disseminated through various social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube.

Additionally, Okanga is under scrutiny for cyber harassment, a violation of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.

Following proceedings at the Milimani Law Courts, he was ordered to remain in custody at Muthaiga police station to facilitate further investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The charges against Okanga include the dissemination of false information, as identified by law enforcement officials during their inquiry. The case is scheduled for a mention on June 18, 2024.

This arrest follows Okanga’s previous detention last November, where he was accused of spreading misleading information on a YouTube channel.

The content allegedly targeted President William Ruto and was deemed an attempt to tarnish the reputation of a government official, potentially inciting public unrest.

Under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act of 2018, disseminating false information online carries severe penalties, including fines up to Ksh5 million, a maximum of five years imprisonment, or both.
