NTSA Issues Update on Collecting New Number Plates

Wednesday, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) issued a directive regarding the accumulation of new-generation license plates.

In a statement, drivers whose license plates were ready were instructed to pick them up from the collection points they selected during the application process.

The NTSA contacted the drivers via SMS, imploring them to retrieve their license plates.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen inspecting the issuance of digital number plates at NTSA Nairobi offices during an impromptu visit on September 22, 2023.

“We humbly request motor vehicle owners who have received SMS notifications on a collection of reflective number plates to visit the centers they identified during the application process,” read the statement in part.

The agency’s service update comes days after it expedited the production and distribution of license plates per the directives of Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen.

During his impromptu visit to NTSA facilities on September 22, the CS instructed the agency to streamline the license plate application and collection process.

His directive was in response to motorists’ complaints that they had to travel to the NSA’s headquarters to retrieve the items.

“I spoke to Maurice, a customer based in Mombasa, who has been waiting for his digital number plate for a while now. Despite the number plate being ready for collection and a notification sent to him from NTSA-Nairobi confirming the same, unnecessary bureaucratic processes and red tape have led to delays,” Murkomen directed then.

“I have given NTSA two weeks to clear this backlog, notify Kenyans of their nearest collection points, and put in place the necessary mechanisms to speed up the turnaround time for processing and issuance of DLs, logbooks, and digital number plates,” he added.

In addition, the authority extended working hours so that Kenyans could access essential services.

Currently, all NTSA Banking Halls and Offices are open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
