No-Show: Police Boss Masengeli Dodges Court as Abducted Trio Sparks Questions
The High Court has summoned acting Inspector-General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, to appear on Thursday to address contempt of court charges and clarify the situation regarding three men allegedly abducted in Kitengela by individuals suspected to be police officers.
This summons was issued on Tuesday evening following Masengeli’s failure to attend court to explain the disappearance of the three men, which include two brothers.
The abducted individuals — Jamil Longton Hashim, his brother Aslam Longton, and activist Bob Michemi Njagi — were taken on Monday, August 19, 2024. A day prior, Hashim and Njagi had hosted an X Space talk show discussing the state of the nation and devolution.
Justice Lawrence Mugambi pointed out that Masengeli has repeatedly ignored three court orders.
“The IG has yet to provide this court with a valid reason for his non-compliance with court orders. I order that he appears in person to address this contempt before the case can proceed,” Justice Mugambi stated.
A State lawyer informed the court that Mr. Masengeli was on official duty and therefore unable to attend the session.
Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo called on Justice Mugambi to issue an arrest warrant for Mr. Masengeli and formally charge him with contempt.

“I urge this court to assert its authority and hold the IG accountable for contempt of court,” she asserted.
Meanwhile, a State counsel revealed that the families of the missing men reported the abductions at Kitengela Police Station, noting that the perpetrators were unidentified.
“Reports indicate that the three were taken by unknown individuals…they did not specify that it was the police who abducted them,” the State counsel clarified.
The Attorney General, through the State counsel, requested additional time to submit an affidavit regarding the disappearance of the three men.
However, the LSK contested this claim, stating that the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kitengela had confirmed to the Daily Nation that they were detaining Mr. Njagi.
The LSK insisted that only police typically transport suspects in unregistered Subaru vehicles.
Justice Mugambi is expected to provide further instructions on whether Mr. Masengeli should be arrested.
