Ndindi Nyoro Grilled Over Ruto’s Conflicting Statements

Citizen TV News anchor Ayub Abdikadir criticized Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro on June 7 for what he termed the Kenya Kwanza government’s double standards regarding the high cost of living debate.

In an interview, the anchor questioned why the administration of President William Ruto initially blamed the previous regime for the country’s economic crisis and placed the blame on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Ruto appears to have changed his stance on the issue since assuming office, admitting that the ongoing war has an impact on Kenya’s economic stability.

“Is it not ironic that your campaign team did not hold this position in the months leading up to August 2022? The president stated (at the time) that the former government of Kenya should not blame the Russia-Ukraine war for the country’s economic crisis, yet a UDA member of parliament sits here and asserts that the war has had an effect. Why are there different rules?” The newscaster asked.

“The distinguishing factor is what they did compared to what we do now,” replied Nyoro.

Abdikadir persisted, arguing that Nyoro’s team, in the months preceding the election, insisted that the war had no effect on the country and urged the then-government, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, to address the country’s primary issue.

In his defense, Nyoro acknowledged the effects of the war but argued that their (the Ruto government’s) resolutions on the matter distinguished the current regime from the previous one.

“Russia and Ukraine are the leading exporters of wheat and edible oils to other nations,” stated Nyoro.

“However, you denied the results. Did you or did you not?” Abdikadir questioned.

“The differentiating factor is the difference between what they did and what we do. We are subsidizing production while they subsidized consumption. You will observe a spiraling effect in terms of production multiplication. Nyoro defended his boss, stating, “We are attacking the cost of living on this basis, not with frivolous statements.”

The chairman of the Budgets and Appropriations Committee, Nyoro. Criticized the Kenyatta administration for merely paying lip service to Kenyans by failing to pay subsidies and shifting the burden to his successor.

“What Kenyans must realize is that the subsidy that existed was merely lip service. Now, we are the ones paying for this subsidy, noted Nyoro.

In the months preceding the August 9 General Election. Ruto rejected Uhuru’s assertions that the high cost of living was largely attributable to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Ruto argued that the problem could be resolved by investing primarily in agriculture and doubling farmers’ output.

“This story about Ukraine is a lost cause,” Ruto stated on June 30, 2022.
