Narok: One Shot Dead, Three Injured As Locals Fight Rangers For Seizing Livestock Grazing In Gazetted Forest
Investigators from the DCI and ODPP are probing an incident wherein two KFS Rangers shot and fatally injured one person among four individuals.
As per KFS, the event took place on December 16th in Narok South Sub-County when an angry crowd assaulted the duo while they were en route to the office.
The park rangers reportedly confiscated numerous livestock, consisting of six goats and six sheep, for unlawfully grazing without supervision in a recently planted woodland area.
While leading the animals toward the camp for additional measures, the pair came across an unfriendly crowd at the Chepalungu Trading Centre.
As per KFS’s announcement, a disorderly crowd of over 100 individuals obstructed the road, insisting on the liberation of the animals.
It was reported that a group from the crowd moved forward and started attacking the rangers using primitive weapons.
“In the ensuing melee one person was fatally shot and three others were injured,” KFS confirmed in a statement.
Law enforcement officials from Nkoben Police Station along with additional Forest Rangers promptly appeared on-site and swiftly took action to manage the situation.
“This unfortunate incident was reported at Nkoben police post vide ob no. 06/16/12/2023,” KFS further noted.

“The Service urges members of the public to remain calm as this regrettable incident is under investigation by the DCIO and ODPP.”
Nevertheless, as per KFS, unauthorized grazing within gazetted forests is not allowed in compliance with the Forest Conservation and Management Act of 2016.
The occurrence in Narok South took place one week after a comparable event documented at Eburu Forest in Nakuru.
On December 14, KFS had to release a statement regarding an incident in which a ranger fatally shot a resident of Eburu Village in Gilgil, Nakuru County.
Recognizing the tragic event, KFS mentioned that inquiries into the events that led to the shooting had begun, and the officers implicated had provided their statements at the Gilgil Police Station.
“The incident took place inside the forest where two people were accosted by Forest Rangers on duty, one escaped and the other person was unfortunately fatally shot,” read a statement by KFS in part.
