The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has announced the launch of an inquiry into a situation involving a Multimedia University student seen in a viral video being mistreated by police.

On Wednesday, September 18, IPOA confirmed the deployment of a rapid response team to the university to verify the authenticity of the video footage in question.

“On Tuesday, September 17, 2024, IPOA initiated investigations after receiving reports of student protests at Multimedia University, where several learners were reportedly injured during the incident.”

The authority added that the response team was tasked with verifying the accuracy of the widely circulated video, showing a student allegedly assaulted by officers during the demonstrations.

IPOA assured that after completing the investigation, they will recommend necessary actions, which may include prosecuting the responsible officers if found guilty.

“IPOA will take appropriate measures, including possible prosecution of officers, depending on the findings of the investigation,” the statement read.

The protests at Multimedia University in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, erupted on Tuesday, leading to the deployment of anti-riot police as students blocked roads in the area.

Later that day, a video circulated online showing police officers confronting a young man inside the university grounds and dropping a tear gas canister next to him.
