Mukumu Girls: Incineration of 800 Bags of Contaminated Cereals in Mombasa.
The Kakamega county government plans to spend Ksh.878,000 to transport contaminated cereals from Mukumu Girls’ School to Bamburi, Mombasa, for incineration.
Governor Farnandez Barasa of Kakamega, flanked by other political leaders and regional commissioner Samson Irungu, delivered 800 bags of maize, beans, and rice for destruction to the Bamburi Cement plant in Mombasa.
The Governor has defended the action for the first time, adding that the shipment has been escorted by security personnel, even though the report on the nature of contamination in the deadly food product remains unclear.
Barasa told journalists at Mukumu Girls, “For accountability purposes, the commissioner here and I want to assure the public that the contaminated maize and beans will now be destroyed professionally and by NEMA procedures.”
The county commissioner has stated that representatives of parents. Teachers, and National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) officials who have accompanied the shipment. Will witness the destruction on Friday.
“Armed security officers will accompany the food.” There will also be teachers, parents, and political class representatives, and if the truck gets stuck, you can even follow it. We want them to touch the ash,” said Irungu, regional commissioner.

The food destruction follows a heated political exchange in the county. Between the executive and the oversight body. Even as Deputy Governor Ayub Savula urged police to arrest Kakamega Senator Dr. Boni Khalwale. And women representative Elsie Muhanda for interfering with the planned food destruction over the weekend.
“Politics has no place in this issue. We want the police to arrest Khalwale and Elsie for interfering with school administration. Mr. Savula told residents of Khwisero earlier this week that it is illegal to dispose of these foodstuffs without complying with NEMA’s regulations.

The three deceased students and the teacher have since been laid to rest, despite calls from their families for government compensation.
