Mukumu Girls Confront Challenging Reopening: Prayer Amidst Adversity

Monday, May 8 saw the reopening of the troubled Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County, which had been closed due to the deaths of three students and a teacher.

Principal Jane Mmbone confirmed to the media that the institution would reopen in stages, with only form four students returning on Monday.

Students would also be required to submit a medical report on their health status, which would be evaluated by school-based physicians.

Mmbone also mentioned that nightly prayer services had been instituted due to the presence of clergy within the institution.

“On Tuesday, we will receive Form Three students, and on Wednesday, the school will host a prayer day for the two classes. Form Two and Form One students will report to school on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

“Saturday will be a day reserved for prayer. “Thereafter, there will be clergy who will lead prayers each evening,” she noted.

In addition, the institution would only receive water from the Kericho Water and Sanitation Company Limited, as all other sources had been terminated.

In addition, all students would receive psychosocial counseling upon reporting. All the food was burned in Bamburi, Mombasa County, the principal reiterated.

“We have Kenya Red Cross, psychosocial counseling, and medical personnel.” Since the students were at home, we requested that their parents bring them to the hospital. Therefore, they will report back with a medical report that will also be evaluated by medics on the ground.

“We followed the procurement procedure and recruited new vendors; we expect to receive the corn and beans today.” The public health officers determine whether or not the food is safe. She indicated that the affected stores had been treated and cleaned.

CS Education To give the government time to complete its investigations, Ezekiel Machogu reassigned the former principal and dissolved the institution’s entire board.

Later, the Ministry of Health determined that the consumption of contaminated water was the cause of the mysterious disease.
