MP Kiarie on Abductions: “Some Abductees Had Gone to Their Boyfriends or Girlfriends”

Dagoretti South Member of Parliament (MP) John Kiarie, also known as KJ, has suggested that each abduction incident should be looked at individually to identify the responsible parties.

In an interview on Citizen TV’s Daybreak, the MP admitted that there have been accusations against the National Police Service (NPS) regarding their involvement in some abductions that occurred in the past month.

However, Kiarie also criticized other cases, claiming that they were staged to create a media stir. He pointed out that one of the reasons people get away with such crimes is because society continues to add more layers to the problems, making it harder to focus on specific issues.

Kiarie emphasized that, as Gladys, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, had suggested, abductions should be examined on a case-by-case basis.

The lawmaker acknowledged that while some cases do involve the police, there have been other instances where individuals who were initially thought to have been abducted were later found to have traveled to another county to visit a boyfriend or girlfriend, and their disappearances were blown out of proportion online.

When asked for specific examples, Kiarie was cautious in his response. He mentioned a case where a woman disappeared for a weekend, but it turned out she had just gone to see her boyfriend in another city.

Citizen TV’s Ayub Abdikadir pressed Kiarie on whether this was documented with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), but the MP admitted he was unsure. Abdikadir then questioned whether Kiarieโ€™s examples were misleading, but the MP suggested discussing a different example of a Tanzanian activist, Maria Sarungi, who was currently in the news.

The issue of abductions has become more concerning in Kenya, with many questioning the safety of both citizens and foreigners. Last year, the country saw a 44% increase in abduction cases, with the majority occurring in regions like Coast, Central, Nyanza, and Nairobi.

Despite the government denying any involvement in the kidnappings, a National Security Report presented in Parliament indicated plans to address the issue, including acquiring modern equipment and speeding up the legal processes involved.
