Moses Kuria Asks CS Kithure Kindiki to Defy Mt Kenya Leaders Demands

Moses Kuria, cabinet secretary for the public service, has instructed Kithure Kindiki, minister of the interior, not to heed the requests of a group of elected women leaders on Mount Kenya.

Concerned about the resurgence of Mungiki, the leaders, commanded by Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara, requested Kindiki to issue shoot-to-kill orders against the alleged sect’s members approximately one week ago.

Conversely, Kuria voiced his dissent towards the request, contending that the instruction would be inequitable towards the victims who are inescapably slaughtered as a result of its implementation.

“President William Ruto is a staunch believer in the rule of law and constitutionalism. Dear Prof Kithure Kindiki, kindly refuse the shoot-to-kill request by Mt Kenya’s elected women leaders,” he asked his colleague.

“Everyone, even suspected Mungikis, deserves fair trial and presumption of innocence. Michuki (Former Minister John Michuki) was right in many ways but not on this one,” he added, referring to the former minister’s ruthless war against suspected sect members.

Michuki encountered significant opposition, primarily from human rights organizations, which contended that his directive violated the Human Rights Act after he issued the shoot-to-kill orders.

A week after the women leaders alleged that the Mungiki sect, which had wreaked havoc in the ’90s and 2000s, was rapidly gaining ground in the region, CS Kuria took this position.

Additionally, they cautioned that they had witnessed the sect’s dark era, which was characterized by violent acts including slayings, maimings, and sexual assaults against women.

“As mothers, we remember the terror, atrocities and chilling experiences that Mungiki unleashed within Central Kenya, we remember the fear, the terror, we remember the pain,” a statement authored by the leaders read in part.

“No political agenda is worth the kind of pain Mungiki will bring to our people. We know how many were killed in the crackdown of 2003/4 and we cannot sit and watch this happen again.”

Former sect leader Maina Njenga, who has recently been involved in multiple legal proceedings, has denied allegations that he is a member of the resurrected group.

He consistently maintained that the gang did not exist and that any assertions of its resurgence were motivated by politics. Njenga further requested recognition as an Azimio-aligned politician.ย
