Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir Enforces Comprehensive Ban on Muguka Sales and Distribution

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has imposed a total ban on the entry, distribution, sale, and use of muguka and its products within the county.

In a statement on Wednesday, May 22, Nassir ordered the immediate closure of all retail and wholesale outlets selling muguka in Mombasa County.

The third directive entails preventing motor vehicles transporting muguka from entering the county.

He emphasized that County Departments are tasked with enforcing this order immediately.

“Therefore, I, Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir, Governor of Mombasa, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and existing laws, hereby order a total prohibition on the entry, transportation, distribution, sale, and use of muguka and its products within Mombasa County,” part of the statement read.

Nassir’s directives follow a recent ban on the sale of muguka near schools.

The governor explained that his decision was influenced by public opinion through participation and consultation with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA).

Nassir also held a press conference, stressing that he had signed an executive order to enforce the ban.

“Government agency figures from NACADA confirm that muguka has caused significant harm, especially to our youth. We’ve tried to create regulations to coexist without harming our children,” he stated.

“Those involved have refused to comply, so I legally consulted and found it appropriate to ban the entry and sale of muguka in Mombasa.”

On May 18, the governor ordered all Miraa shops within 100 meters of schools, mosques, and churches to close.

While issuing the directive, Governor Nassir noted that business owners wouldย be allocatedย designated areas to operate inย at a later date.
