Meru County Celebrates After Kawira Mwangaza’s Impeachment(Video)
Former Governor Kawira Mwangaza faced a decisive impeachment vote from senators on all three charges against her.
County Assembly members contended that, despite previously surviving two impeachment attempts, Governor Mwangaza persisted in misusing her office, violating the Constitution and other laws, and engaging in severe misconduct.
A significant allegation against her was that she misled the public by falsely asserting that KSh 86 million had been raised through Paybill number 247247, Account Number 0400163917899, following the murder of Daniel Muthiani, also known as Sniper.
In actuality, only KSh 286,516 was collected, a misrepresentation that was deemed a breach of the moral and ethical standards expected of public officials.
Residents of Meru rejoiced at Mwangaza’s impeachment.
After the Senate’s decision to remove her from office, many residents celebrated into the night, singing farewell songs and expressing their belief that she would now be held accountable for her alleged role in Sniper’s death.
Elsewhere, Meru residents gathered to watch the Senate’s proceedings. When Speaker Amason Kingi declared that the impeachment had been upheld, the crowd erupted in cheers, celebrating what they viewed as a significant win.

Governor Mwangaza’s removal triggers a series of constitutional procedures under Kenya’s governance framework.
As per the Constitution, Meru Deputy Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia will assume the role of county governor for the remainder of the term.
The Constitution specifies a clear process for such transitions.
If a county governor’s position becomes vacant, the deputy governor automatically steps into the role for the remainder of the term.
According to Article 182(3) of the Constitution, if the deputy governor assumes office with more than two and a half years remaining before the next scheduled election, they are considered to have served a full term as county governor.
