LSK Probes Ombeta’s Representation of Pastor Ezekiel, Clarifies Decision
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) clarified attorney Cliff Ombeta’s legal standing on Tuesday, May 2, after a controversy erupted when he represented Pastor Ezekiel Odero in court.
LSK noted further that Ombeta was accused of practicing law without a license in 2022 and 2023.
“We are aware of allegations that the attorney practiced without a license for the first part of this year and as far back as last year.”A formal complaint against the advocate will be filed with the Advocates Disciplinary Tribunal once sufficient evidence has been gathered, according to a letter from the CEO/Secretary Florence Muturi.

According to the Society, Ombeta’s status changed from inactive to active for 2023 on Tuesday, May 2 morning.
LSK added that the attorney had applied for his 2023 license to practice law. On January 26, he reportedly presented an approved application to the Council.
In addition, he was required to pay the necessary fees, which he did on March 7, thereby making him eligible to apply for the practicing certificate for 2023.
LSK explained, “The attorney paid for his practicing certificate on 1 May 2023 at 4.36 p.m. and received a receipt via the portal on the same date.”

Ezekiel Odero hired Ombeta and Danstan Omari on April 29 to represent him in court, where he faced charges of terrorism, kidnapping, mass murder of followers, and indoctrination of the faithful.
The pair joined Jared Magolo, who was already acting on the pastor’s behalf.
On Tuesday, May 2, the attorneys filed a petition with the Shanzu Court requesting their client’s release.
Ezekiel argued that there was no reason to extend his detention beyond 30 days. Because investigators were still reviewing the evidence against him.
On Saturday, April 29, criminal attorneys Danstan Omari (left) and Cliff Ombeta addressed the media after being retained to represent Pastor Ezekiel Odera in court.
“The police claim that they are gathering evidence against the Preacher, but they wish to continue holding him. Omari argued that this is a complete violation of Pastor Ezekiel’s rights.
The police were ordered to detain the suspect for two days, with a hearing scheduled for Thursday, May 4.
