King Charles Expresses Alarm on Ruto-Raila Dispute

The Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles III, has issued a heartfelt appeal to opposition leader Raila Odinga, imploring him to engage in dialogue with President William Ruto.

Through the Commonwealth Secretariat Spokesperson, His Majesty expressed concern about the violence on Thursday, July 20, notably after several protesters were killed.

“The Commonwealth is gravely concerned about the ongoing escalation of violence, conflict, and loss of life in Kenya and urges all leaders and communities to engage in dialogue to address Kenya’s problems.

An excerpt of the statement read, “While economic concerns are the root of the conflict, it is troubling that the protests have witnessed an increase in the use of hate speech, and we call on leaders on both sides of the political divide to de-escalate the situation.”

The Commonwealth, which consists of 56 countries, emphasized that it was prepared to mediate, reconcile, and restore peace and tranquility in the country.

“Dialogue is the optimal way to resolve the current circumstance. “We strongly urge all parties to immediately engage in a constructive dialogue based on Commonwealth values and mutual respect, and for Kenya’s leaders to immediately explore practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing their country and communities,” the spokesperson for King Charles III, the head of the Commonwealth, added.

The statement was made hours after the Kenya Chapter of Amnesty International reported that thirty persons had been killed in five months of anti-government protests.

Irungu Houghton, executive director of Amnesty International, attributed the fatalities to extra-judicial police killings during a press conference.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the police have resorted to beatings, arbitrary arrests and detention of protestors, indiscriminate and disproportionate use of tear gas and water cannons, and other severe rights violations to control the demonstrations.

“We demand that the state immediately cease its violent policing and criminalization of demonstrations. Irungu Houghton explained, “We demand immediate investigations and prosecutions of police officers and their commanders for excessive use of force by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and the Director of Public Prosecutions.”

Raila, the driving force behind the protests, insists that his faction will take to the streets until the state reduces the anticipated skyrocketing cost of living following the implementation of the Finance Act.

Additional taxes on salaried Kenyans, according to the former prime minister, would reduce incomes and drive more Kenyans below the poverty line.

Ruto, on the other hand, stated that the only way to reduce the cost of living is to invest in production and increase government revenue so that services can be provided efficiently.
