Kindiki Launches Security Operation on Meru-Isiolo Border to Combat Cattle Rustling

Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki has ordered a security operation along the Meru-Isiolo border to combat the region’s rising incidence of cattle rustling.

The CS stated that 15 counties were severely affected by banditry, but added that the Rift Valley criminals had been subdued.

He stated that five sub-counties in Meru were affected by chronic cattle rustling.

“Similar to how we dealt with bandits in Rift Valley, we will deploy special units in Meru and Isiolo to eliminate this menace. We know that general duty officers cannot stop cattle rustling. The nonsensical behavior must cease, said Professor Kindiki.

According to him, banditry is second only to terrorism in terms of security threats facing the country, and his ministry is eager to eradicate cattle rustling.

“We were able to subdue terrorism by pursuing terrorists in their hiding places. “We will pursue the bandits until they are silenced,” the CS said.

Prof. Kindiki, speaking at Antubetwe Kiongo Market on Tuesday during a security meeting, also directed the establishment of an Anti-Stock Theft Unit in the area before the launch of an operation.

He was accompanied by security personnel from the counties of Meru and Isiolo, Senator Kathuri Murungi of Meru, Deputy Governor Isaac M’Ethingia, and Members of Parliament Moses Kirima and Mugambi Rindikiri.

The recent murder of former Antubetwe Kiongo MCA George Kaliunga on Sunday prompted the meeting.

However, CS Kindiki demanded the formation of a special investigation team to investigate the murder of the former MCA, claiming it was suspicious.

In the last two weeks, three additional people have been killed. And one has been injured in cattle rustling incidents in the region.

“I do not believe that the former MCA was murdered by bandits. I, therefore, order the DCI to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators. CS Kindiki also requested that the internal affairs unit investigate the circumstances. Surrounding the killing of the former MCA who was accompanying the police.

According to Senator Kathuri Murungi of Meru, Isiolo should conduct an operation to recover stolen livestock.

“We are aware that our neighbors have lost many animals as a result of the drought and are aiming to restock Meru. Mr. Murungi stated, “We have endured cattle rustlers for many years.”

Additionally, the CS ordered two police posts in Mutuati Sub County to be upgraded to police stations.

“We are currently screening police reservists to increase security in Meru North.” I will ensure the deployment of 200 reservists within the next month,” he declared.

The interior CS further directed the Meru County Commissioner, Fred Ndunga. And his Isiolo counterpart, Geoffrey Omoding, to collaborate to enhance border security.

CS Kindiki has also called for an urgent security meeting. Between the county commissioners of Meru and Tharaka Nithi to discuss boundary disputes.

Land disputes have been escalating in recent years in regions bordering Meru and Tharaka Nithi.
