Karen Nyamu booed after asking Embu residents to register for SHA: “Msiniite harambee”

Senator Karen Nyamu has cautioned Kenyans against asking for her financial support during fundraisers if they have not registered for the Social Health Authority (SHA).

While addressing residents of Embu on Friday, Nyamu emphasized the importance of supporting government programs like SHA. She stated that if people continued to reject such initiatives, they should not expect her to contribute to their community projects.

The Senator was attending a requiem mass in Embu County when she took the opportunity to encourage the mourners to sign up for SHA. However, her message was not well received, as the crowd strongly opposed the program and expressed their dissatisfaction. In response, Nyamu warned them that if they refused to register for SHA, they should not call on her for financial help in the future.

“I have heard that people in Embu are rejecting government programs, especially SHA. I want you to know that SHA is a beneficial initiative. It will assist you when you fall sick, so you should all register,” Nyamu told the audience. However, the mourners firmly responded with “hatuitaki,” meaning “we don’t want it.”

The Senator then issued a firm warning: “If you don’t support it, then don’t invite me to your fundraisers again.”

Her remarks were met with resistance, as the crowd murmured and heckled. Some refused to applaud, showing their disapproval.

The SHA medical scheme replaced the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) but has been met with widespread criticism. Since its launch in October 2024, many Kenyans have raised concerns about its inefficiency. Complaints include delayed services, financial struggles, and an inability to cover certain illnesses, despite requiring higher contributions than NHIF.

According to the Ministry of Health, as of February, 19.4 million Kenyans had registered for SHA. However, the program faces financial difficulties. Health CS Deborah Barasa and Director General of Health Dr. Patrick Amoth revealed in a press briefing on February 12 that out of the registered members, only 3.3 million are actively contributing to the scheme, raising concerns about its sustainability.
