IGP Koome ordered to arraign Raila Odinga’s bodyguard
To prosecute Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga’s bodyguard, Maurie Ogeta, the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, has been given the order to do so.
On Friday, when the case was brought before him, Justice Lawrence Mugambi gave the decision that was reached.
The notice states, “That, pending the hearing and determination of this application inter-parties, a writ of habeas corpus is hereby issued directing the 2nd Respondent to produce Maurice Ogeta before a court of competent jurisdiction in Nairobi or any other Court within the Republic of Kenya for an inquiry into the issue of his detention,” and this is what is written on the document.
In addition, Mugambi issued an order stating that answers to the matter must be submitted and served within three days of the issuance of the order.
The notice states, “Leave is granted to the Petitioner/Applicant to file and serve any further documentation/replying affidavit if it is necessary within three days.”
On July 31, 2023, the case will be brought up for discussion on compliance and additional direction.
According to reports, Ogeta was taken into custody by the police on Wednesday morning as he was making his way to work; his current whereabouts are unclear at this time.

His loved ones had given the government until Friday evening at six o’clock to get him released.
While speaking to the media on Wednesday, his mother, Jane Ogeta, called for her son’s immediate release.
She said, “I can’t say anything without seeing my son, and I will only talk when I see him.” “I will only talk when I see him,” she continued.
She stated that she became aware of the news regarding the son’s detention at approximately ten in the morning on Wednesday.
“My son, my child, may God watch over him and keep him safe. What exactly is it that he’s done wrong? Simply put, he is a bodyguard. Bring back my child, please. I need to see my kid!”
When Jane received the news at 1 pm from a relative in Migori that Maurice’s whereabouts are unknown, she stated that she was stunned and could not believe it.
“We have never known our son as anyone other than Baba’s bodyguard. Why did they decide to take him away? What has he been up to? She inquired about it.
The family and the Komolo community as a whole have expressed their concern over the silence of important institutions on the ‘disappearance’ of a family member or friend of theirs.
On Thursday, Raila refuted reports that his bodyguard had been given his freedom.
A video with the hashtag “Free Ogeta” and the statement “We will leave no one behind” was published on social media by the leader of the ODM party.
