Ichung’wah Criticizes Catholic Bishops on Protest Stance
On Wednesday, July 19, Kikuyu Member of Parliament and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah blasted the Catholic Church for its stance on the ongoing protests.
The Leader of the Majority, in particular, chastised Nyeri Archbishop Anthony Muheria for suggesting that the government repeal the Finance Act.
Speaking in Narok County, the MP requested that the archbishop contact former President Uhuru Kenyatta and request that he cease supporting protests.
“I respect the clergy, including my friend Muheria, who works closely with Uhuru.” “I want to ask you Muheria, because Uhuru is your friend, if you want peace in the country, talk to him because he is the instigator of the protests,” he said.
Ichung’wah claimed that the protests were being utilized by the opposition to gain control of the government.
Raila and Uhuru should also recognize the fact that the Kenya Kwanza government was elected democratically, according to the Kikuyu MP.

Muheria had challenged Ruto’s government to consider the high cost of living when developing tax policy during a press conference hosted by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops.
“Against this backdrop, the recently enacted Finance Act places an unsustainable burden on already distressed citizens, particularly those in the low-income bracket,” he said, urging its repeal.
“Speak to your brother, friend, and parishioner Uhuru Kenyatta,” said the third-term MP.
The Catholic Church is one of the country’s main Christian groups, and it has had a role in many prior matters concerning national interests and governmental reforms.
On Thursday, July 20, Raila Odinga vowed that Kenyans will continue to demonstrate until the Finance Act was repealed and the cost of living was reduced.
Uhuru Kenyatta has failed to respond to charges that he is a financier of anti-government protests.
