Owino Defends Police, Claims Kenyans Lack Civility

Former Police Spokesperson Charles Owino has said that Kenyans are to fault for the current anti-government protests.

On Wednesday, Owino stated that Kenyans’ behavior during protests is what gets them in trouble.

He claimed that civilians are “uncivilized” in their protests, which is why security forces are sometimes forced to use excessive force to subdue them.

“The deaths occurred because we, as a community, are not civil.” We have not received adequate legal educationโ€ฆ”We are not obedient; if we were obedient or civil, we would not have gotten into a confrontation with the police in the first place,” Owino remarked on JKL.

The ex-police chief chastised those who criticized police for their conduct during protests to maintain peace and order.

Owino emphasized that security teams, like any other person, have the right to defend themselves depending on the situation.

“There is a lot of prejudice against the police, but you can’t sleep in your house without the presence of the police.” “Police officers will always act on their own because they do not have time to consult their books or superiors,” he continued.

On Wednesday, at least six people were killed and 30 more were injured in different anti-government protests across the country.

As the protests begin their second day, more than 300 individuals have been arrested across the country.

According to Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, incidences of lawlessness occurred in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay, Siaya, and Nakuru.

He stated that those apprehended would face charges such as looting, malicious property destruction, arson, robbery with violence, and attacking law enforcement authorities.
