Ichung’wah Alleges Deputy President Gachagua Assaulted Dennis Itumbi Over Tweets

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah shared on Tuesday, September 17, an incident where Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua allegedly attacked Digital Strategist Dennis Itumbi during the height of the 2022 election campaigns.

Speaking in an interview with Spice FM, Ichung’wah claimed the incident took place at a State Lodge, although he did not specify which one. He recounted how the Deputy President nearly assaulted Itumbi for failing to tweet what was expected of him.

“I don’t know how to describe a high-ranking official who enters a State Lodge meeting, grabs a junior officer like Dennis Itumbi by the collar, and threatens physical violence simply because he didn’t tweet as desired,” Ichung’wah said in the interview.

At that time, Dennis Itumbi played a pivotal role in the Kenya Kwanza Campaigns, which helped President William Ruto secure the presidency.

Ichung’wah, highlighting what he perceives as the deputy president’s retaliatory nature, cited other incidents where Gachagua reportedly reacted emotionally when people stopped following his directives or began associating with those he disapproved of.

He referenced an occasion when Gachagua reportedly mocked his own MP, Njuguna Kawanjiku, by publicly disclosing the expenses he incurred for his dowry and wedding, along with the time dedicated to the event.

“You’ve heard the Kiambaa MP share his experience, and I can tell you, many MPs, especially from the Mt. Kenya region, have faced similar ordeals. Some are gripped with fear due to the pressure and intimidation they face,” Ichung’wah added.

Ichung’wah also mentioned another incident where Gachagua allegedly used inappropriate language when referring to MP Florence Jematiah from Baringo, simply because she worked with Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.

These acts of intimidation and manipulation, according to Ichung’wah, are part of Gachagua’s strategy to control the Mt. Kenya region for his political ambitions, punishing anyone who defies him.

Furthermore, Ichung’wah criticized the Deputy President for failing to fulfill his duties, which included communicating government policies to the public. He accused Gachagua of focusing on complaining on vernacular media when things don’t go his way.

“We now have a deputy president who has never appeared on a national TV station to discuss government policies. Instead, he only goes on vernacular stations to complain about various issues,” Ichung’wah stated.

This, Ichung’wah claimed, is one reason why he and 48 Mt. Kenya MPs supported Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their liaison to the executive.

Ichung’wah dismissed allegations that this move was politically motivated, explaining that they simply chose Kindiki to represent them in communicating government policies and development projects to the public
