Househelp Admits to Stealing Sh683K Gold Ring from Boss, Sells for Sh4K to Pay Medical Bills

A househelp has been found guilty of stealing a gold ring valued at Sh683,000 from a nurse based in Australia who was vacationing in Runda.

On Monday, Ms. Violet Ndukwe Lijoodi, 28, confessed before the Milimani court to taking the ring from Ms. Norah Mitchell Were between August 3 and 8, 2024.

Amid tears, Ms. Lijoodi pleaded for leniency and mercy from Magistrate Rose Ndobi, revealing that she sold the gold ring for just Sh4,000 at Kawangware market.

The prosecution stated that Norah was on holiday, staying with a relative in Runda Estate, Nairobi when the ring disappeared.

“Your honor, I beg for forgiveness from this court and Mama Norah, from whom I stole the ring. I did not realize its sentimental value to her. I admitted to her that I was the one who opened her bag and took it,” Ms. Lijoodi said.

“Norah told me it was a pity that I sold her ring, worth tens of thousands, for only Sh4,000.”

Ms. Lijoodi admitted to selling the ring to a second-hand dealer at Kawangware Market.

The domestic worker further disclosed to the court that she stole the ring on August 3 before taking her scheduled break.

The accused, who was apprehended on August 8, 2024, was charged alongside Mr. Francis Mwima, 35.

Mr. Mwima, however, denied the charges and was released on a Sh1 million bond.

Following her conviction, Ms. Lijoodi appealed to Ms. Ndobi for forgiveness, citing her responsibility to care for her ailing father and three children.

“I was unaware of the ring’s value until I was informed,” she sobbed.

She explained that she sold the ring to a shopkeeper to cover medical expenses for her sick father and support her children.

Magistrate Ndobi ordered a pre-sentence report for the accused and remanded her until September 5, 2024.
