Kenya has reported its fifth case of Mpox, involving a 29-year-old woman living near Tumaini Academy in Mombasa.

Health CS Deborah Barasa stated that the woman contracted the virus from her spouse, the country’s fourth confirmed case, who is currently receiving treatment in Nakuru.

The woman was admitted to Coast General Hospital on August 28, 2024. After testing positive, she was transferred to Utange Hospital’s Mpox Isolation Centre for treatment.

The statement mentioned that the patient has no recent travel history to Mpox-affected countries, but her spouse had returned from Rwanda on August 24, 2024.

CS Barasa noted that 33 people in contact with confirmed cases are being closely monitored as authorities work to contain the virus.

Of the five confirmed Mpox cases in Kenya, two patients have fully recovered, while the remaining three are in isolation and responding well to treatment.

Barasa reassured the public that healthcare facilities are equipped to handle Mpox cases, encouraging those with symptoms to seek medical attention without fear.

Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is a viral infection spread through direct contact with an infected individual. Symptoms include rashes, high fever, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, and backaches.

The CS urged the public to limit travel to Mpox-affected regions and seek medical help if symptoms arise.

Healthcare workers caring for Mpox patients were also advised to follow preventive measures provided by the Ministry of Health.

Additionally, Kenyans were advised to avoid contact with live or dead animals and maintain good hygiene practices.

Barasa affirmed the government’s commitment to protecting public health, with ongoing efforts to control the outbreak.

The announcement followed news that Kenya will begin administering Mpox vaccines by December, with 2 million doses being sourced from Denmark’s Nordic manufacturing company.

Health DG Patrick Amoth confirmed that vulnerable groups will be prioritized when the vaccine distribution begins.
