On Tuesday, a juvenile was wounded in Ng’aratuko, Baringo County, a few kilometers away from where Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki was holding a security meeting.

The CS was meeting with security officers following a spate of bandit attacks in the region when the 13-year-old was shot by armed men believed to be bandits who attacked a group of herders.

The perpetrators also fired upon students taking the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations in 2023 at Ng’aratuko Primary School.

Julius Kiragu, the commander of the Baringo County Police, told reporters that the government has deployed additional security personnel to the area to bolster safety.

However, it was unclear why the assailants carried out the attacks.

After firing the shots, the gunmen reportedly retreated into the bush, as reported by the police.

It was previously reported that the bandits had invaded a neighboring village and stolen a herd of cattle.

The assault comes days after cattle rustlers assaulted a GSU camp and a primary school in Baringo.

Recent increases in bandit attacks in ASAL regions have prompted Kindiki to tour the region to devise strategies to eradicate the menace.

Tuesday, CS Kindiki held a meeting in Loruk, Baringo North Constituency, with the Rift Valley Regional and Baringo County Security and Intelligence Committees to discuss the pressing issue.

Kindiki has pledged to protect the most afflicted regions, including Northern Kenya and Lamu.

“Notorious livestock rustlers and bandits have for years terrorized innocent residents and attacked security officers using illegal firearms, especially in Eastern and North Rift. These counties are on the radar of our specialized security agencies,” he stated in September.

Kindiki issued a shoot-to-kill order against bandits at the time.
