Greenwood Connects with Ten Hag: First Call Since Charges Dropped

In early February, charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault was dropped against Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.

Mason Greenwood allegedly had his first conversation with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag since the charges against him were dropped in early February.

The 21-year-old forward was scheduled to stand trial in November, but Greater Manchester Police announced last week that the Crown Prosecution Service had dropped rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior charges.

The prosecutor’s office stated that a conviction was no longer a realistic possibility due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and the discovery of new evidence.

Greenwood is still ineligible for selection by Manchester United, who are conducting an internal investigation into the player’s conduct, with no timeframe specified.

Last week, Ten Hag refused to comment on the England international, but The Sun reports that the two spoke on the phone days after the charges were dropped.

The reported phone call marked the first time the Dutchman had spoken with Greenwood since he assumed his position as manager of the Red Devils last summer.

After his arrest in January 2022, all communication between the club and the player was conducted via a third party.

A source told The Sun, “Mason has been out of contact with the club for quite some time.” When they did communicate, it was never directly but always through a third party. Therefore, the manager’s call was a significant gesture that he greatly appreciated.

“The manager inquired about his physical and mental health and expressed his happiness that the charges had been dropped. He believed that contacting Mason was the appropriate action to take. However, he made it clear that the club, not he, will determine whether Mason can play for United again.”

According to the source, Greenwood would like to “get his career back on track” after not playing competitive football for over a year.

Regarding the reported phone call with Ten Hag, the source added, “It lifted Mason’s spirits. He has been a member of United since he was six years old and desires to return to playing football for them. He is happiest with a ball at his feet and desires to restart his career. But he is aware that the club must make a monumental decision.”

Greenwood’s contract at Old Trafford extends through the summer of 2025.

Having made his senior debut in the Champions League in March 2019, he has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for Manchester United and earned a single England cap in 2020.
