Green Monday: Government Unveils Simple Steps to Secure Your Free Tree Seedling!

For tree seedlings to be planted on Monday, November 10, 2023, during National Tree Growing Day, the government has instructed the general public to visit the Chief’s office in their vicinity.

Principal Secretary of the Interior Raymond Omollo urged all Kenyans to participate in the exercise that will be conducted by President William Ruto in a statement released on Friday.

“Following the gazettement of the National Tree Growing Day set for the 13th of November 2023, we urge all Kenyans to participate in the exercise that will be led by H.E President William Ruto.”

“Members of the public are advised to visit their nearest Chief’s office for tree seedlings and liaise with the area Assistant County Commissioner and Deputy County Commissioner in respective Counties,” said Omollo.

The undertaking to cultivate trees will be initiated by President Ruto at Kiu Wetland in Makindu, Makueni County.

Tree-growing initiatives at the county level shall be spearheaded by Cabinet Secretaries, with each Secretary advocating for tree-growing initiatives in a minimum of two counties.

Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya asserts that nurseries operated by the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), Kenya Forest Services (KFS), and various other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of Government house a total of 150 million plantable seedlings throughout the nation.

“Additionally, there are millions of seedlings in private nurseries, run by women and youth groups in Community Forest Associations and Community-Based Organizations across the country available at a fee,” said CS Tuya.

She added: “I would like to urge fellow citizens, that in the true Kenyan spirit, let us buy a seedling or two from these community-run nurseries and plant in our shambas.”

On Monday, the government intends to sow a minimum of 100 million seedlings throughout the nation, with a national target of 500 million seedlings for the brief rainy season.
