Grave Diggers in Shakahola: Paid KSh 1k Daily, Suffer Mental Breakdowns

One of the men who has been employed to dig graves in the Shakahola Forest has revealed that each day they are paid KSh 1,000. 

According to the man, who Citizen TV has only identified as Kazungu, the operation is time-consuming and has a negative impact on his mental health. 

“To begin, it has affected me because, ever since the day I was born, I have never seen a grave that contained the remains of more than one person. “Thirdly, I have never witnessed the process of exhuming bodies before, but that is exactly what goes on here,” he related. 

Kazungu described the work as arduous. But insisted that it must be carried out in exchange for a daily wage of KSh 1,000. 

Support of a psychosocial nature 

Handymen in Shakahola who have been digging up graves have stated that they are in need of psychosocial support. In order to cope with the trauma that they have experienced as a result of their work. 

One of the locals who was hired to exhume the corpses said that the exercise was giving them sleepless nights. Because of the horrors that they witnessed during the exercise, which has since been halted because of the bad weather. 

They may have experienced traumatic effects as a result of the activity that took place in Shakahola Forest.

 “If they are not supported now. They might feel okay and continue with life, but later it might come back to haunt them,” an expert said. “If they are not supported now, they might feel okay, and continue with life.”
