Mob Lynches 2 Suspected Police Officers in Tharaka-Nithi

On Saturday evening in Tharaka-Nithi County, a mob killed two individuals believed to be police officers in unclear circumstances at a local market.

Igambang’ombe Deputy County Commissioner Julius Arap Too stated that their identities have not been confirmed because they were not in uniform at the time of the incident at Kanthanje market.

Residents identified the attendant as Murithi Njeru.

Mr. Njeru’s distress call attracted the mob that brutally murdered the two men.

Mr. Arap Too stated that Mr. Njeru sustained head injuries that were likely caused by a sharp object.

“I can confirm that two individuals, believed to be police officers assigned to the Kathwana police station, were murdered by a mob at Kanthanje market. We have not yet established their identity. Mr. Arap stated, “I transported a wounded civilian to St. Orsola Hospital in Materi.”

Mr. Njeru was the civilian to whom he referred.

Following the assault, Igambang’ombe Sub-County Police Commander Charles Muchiri stated that they were unable to immediately determine what transpired before the two victims died at the scene.

Mr. Muchiri stated, “We have launched an investigation into the incident. But we cannot immediately say what transpired because we discovered the two bodies in a deserted market.”

Due to the sensitivity of the situation. An eyewitness who spoke to the Nation on condition of anonymity said the two men arrived on a motorcycle. Entered the store, and then engaged in a confrontation with Mr. Njeru.

He yelled for assistance, claiming he was being attacked by thieves, prompting the mob to rush to his aid.

“The deceased, who was later identified as police officers by locals, were not wearing uniforms and carried only handcuffs,” the witness stated.

Following a confrontation. A police officer assigned to the Mukothima police post in Tharaka North Sub-County. Shot and injured a bar owner at the Mukothima market less than a week ago.

The victim was transported to a hospital in the adjacent county of Meru.

Willis Mugambi, the chairman of the Tharaka-Nithi County Bodaboda Operators’ Association, was reportedly shot dead by a police officer during three days of protests in Chuka town over the killing of a civilian three weeks ago.

In June 2020, a chief and the head of the Chuka police station were both hacked to death in Igambang’ombe, Kamaindi.
The court proceeding is still ongoing.
