Govt Issues Update on Raila’s AUC Bid Days After Ruto Nominates ODM Members to Cabinet
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported progress on Friday in Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s pursuit of the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson position.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei announced via his X account that the government plans to submit Odinga’s Curriculum Vitae to the AUC for consideration.
Sing’Oei shared images of Odinga’s resume, captioned, “All set to go!” highlighting the progress in Odinga’s bid for the top continental role.
Odinga’s application and related documents were translated into the six official AU languages and submitted for formal candidacy.
AUC election rules require candidates to translate their application documents and resumes into French, English, Kiswahili, Arabic, Portuguese, and Spanish before submission.
President William Ruto’s administration initially committed to fully supporting Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the prestigious AUC position.
The document submission plans follow a joint press conference held by the Orange Democratic Movement party leader and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi about the AU Commission candidacy progress.

At the press conference, Mudavadi expressed gratitude to Odinga for the productive meeting and discussions, formally endorsing Odinga’s candidacy.
“We are confident the candidate will pursue excellence, aligning with the continent’s collective aspirations of Africa we want by 2063, as outlined in the AU’s Agenda 2063,” Mudavadi stated.
The latest announcement comes amid political turmoil within Odinga’s Azimio coalition, following President Ruto’s nomination of three ODM leaders to his cabinet.
This nomination caused division within Azimio, with some leaders endorsing Wiper party’s Kalonzo Musyoka as the new opposition coalition leader.
Defending the decision to appoint Kalonzo as the Azimio leader, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni noted that Raila Odinga was focused on his campaign for the AUC chairperson position.
“We thank our leader Raila Odinga for his successful leadership of our Coalition since its formation. We know his quest for AUC leadership is entering a critical stage, and we wish him luck as he prepares for the continental duties,” Kioni explained.
