Governor Fatuma Achani of Kwale has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Raila Odinga, urging him to retract the controversial comments attributed to him about her in Kwale.

On January 24, 2024, during a gathering of Orange Democratic Delegates (ODM) in Kwale, Raila claimed that Governor Fatuma Achani was involved in a romantic relationship with a male Cabinet Secretary.

“The rumors I am hearing, you know I have two ears. So this side I am hearing that I have gone too much on Mama’s side, and you know she is the wife of *** [sic],” Raila claimed

Governor Achani, absent from the Baraza Park in Matuga forum, asserted that she felt insulted by Raila’s remarks.

The UDA governor has instructed Raila to retract and apologize for his comments within the next seven days, beginning on January 26.

In a subsequent communication released by Nicky Gitonga, who serves as the director of communications and spokesperson, Achani expressed regret over Raila’s remarks.

“Sexual and Gender-based violence (GBV) is one of the most obstinate violations of human rights across the globe. These demeaning and uncalled-for remarks are not only disrespectful to Governor Achani but also undermine the progress made in bridging the third-gender rule gap in the country.

“Governor Achani, a married woman and devoted Muslim, deserves respect for her leadership role in Kwale County. The statement by Raila Odinga, specifically the phrase “huyo ni bibi ya ***,” is deemed defamatory,” Gitonga condemned Odinga.

He cautioned that legal measures would be pursued against both the ODM party and Raila Odinga personally if they were to ignore their requests.

“This incident highlights the county government’s unwavering commitment to combating SGBV and upholding the dignity of women in Kenya. We stand firm in our dedication to the principles of the third gender rule and the just passed Bill on SGBV in Kwale County… and call for a respectful and inclusive discourse in our political landscape,” the statement read in part.

Raila is currently engaged in a week-long coastal tour aimed at promoting the mass recruitment initiative of ODM. On Friday, he visited Mombasa and Taita Taveta, following his recent visits to Lamu and Tana River counties.

On Tuesday, he extended a warm welcome to fellow politicians who had previously left his party to join the Kenya Kwanza movement.
