Governor Sakaja Takes Action: MCA’s Apartment Demolished

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has gained praise from Eastleigh residents by taking decisive action to demolish a tall residential building that was reportedly constructed on a disputed parcel of land in the area.

On Friday, August 4th, the building, allegedly built by a dishonest entrepreneur and a County Assembly Member, was demolished by a team of demolishers.

Sakaja took action in response to complaints from residents regarding the local Member of County Assembly (MCA) who allegedly seized public land adjacent to the Eastleigh Health Centre.

According to reports, the politician allegedly conspired with another Member of the County Assembly (MCA) who was responsible for erecting the building that was subsequently demolished by officials working for Sakaja.

A formal complaint letter was addressed to Geoffrey Mosiria, the Chief Officer of Health Facilities in Nairobi County. The purpose of the letter was to prompt him to take action in reclaiming a crucial piece of land essential for the County’s health services expansion.

After the demolition took place, a local Member of the County Assembly (MCA) leveled accusations against Sakaja, claiming that he engaged in intimidation. Moreover, the MCA asserted that the county government was pursuing a witchhunt against him, as he had previously exposed instances of fraud and misappropriation of funds.

Nevertheless, Dr. Miriam Etole, the Subcounty Medical Officer, highlighted the county’s responsibility to safeguard public land, particularly crucial health service institutions.

“Eastleigh Health Centre is one of the Public Health Facilities within Kamukunji Sub-County located on three plots along Fourth Street and Muyuyu Lane Eastleigh Second Avenue.

“The facility offers Curative, Maternal Neonatal Child Health Services, Maternity as well Sexual and Gender-Based Violence response unit,” Subcounty Medical Officer Dr Miriam Etole reiterated.

Etole, in a letter addressed to the Chief Officer of Health Facilities in the Nairobi County Government, stated that the Member of the County Assembly (MCA) destroyed a building on the hospital’s property, which was constructed before the MCA built his own apartment there.

“The sub-county medical officer reported that the facility housed the offices of the ward administrator, and the Eastleigh Airbase MCA had requested to set up his office at the facility. However, during the Christmas holidays, the MCA accessed the building and demolished it, leaving residents with no health center,” Etole added.

Sakaja has consistently stressed the importance of tackling land encroachment within the city and safeguarding critical government infrastructure.
