Governor Arati Stops Salaries Of 740 Workers

The Kisii County government has suspended the payment of wages to 740 employees who did not appear during a census.

According to Kisii County, the payments were suspended because the affected employees were not present when the decentralized unit conducted an audit.

The exercise, led by Governor Simba Arati, was intended to purge the staff register of ghost employees, who, according to the government, consume billions of dollars in salaries and allowances.

A portion of the affected staff has complained that they were unjustly targeted because they reported to their workstations for the headcount.

A total of 397 Health Department employees, including consultants, medical physicians, clinical Officers, and non-medical personnel, have been affected.

Governor Simba Arati alleged that the Kisii County government employed phantom employees a year ago, prompting the EACC to initiate an investigation into alleged insurance fraud and a staffing increase.

Investigations conducted by the county government revealed that the county had 82 vehicles but employed 256 chauffeurs, raising suspicions of mismanagement within the county.

The governor also stated that he would spend approximately Ksh10 million to verify all of his employees’ academic credentials.

Arati stated that the exercise would be conducted for the 5,900 county employees at a cost of one-half of what the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) typically charges.

The governor stated that a portion of the county’s workforce had presented fraudulent employment documentation.
