Exclusive: How Gen Zs Can Register Political Party Before 2027

On July 28, the Registrar of Political Parties rejected the application of ten Gen Z political parties, citing that the names chosen indicated a lack of inclusivity.

Registrar Ann Nderitu noted in a statement that the application breached Article 91 (1) (a) (e) of the Constitution, which rendered it unapproved.

In light of recent political upheavals, many young people, especially from Generation Z, are eager to influence the nation’s political scene.

For those aiming to establish new political parties, it is crucial to understand the registration process to prevent rejection by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

This guide outlines the steps for Gen Z to register a political party in Kenya if they wish to actively engage in shaping the nation’s politics.

In Kenya, the registration of political parties is managed by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), which is currently headed by Registrar Ann Nderitu.

The process is regulated by the Political Parties Act, which specifies the requirements and procedures for forming and registering a political party within Kenya.

The Registrar of Political Parties advises that before starting the registration process, it is essential to have a well-defined vision and objectives for the political party.

Step-by-Step Guide

Key preparatory actions involve creating a party constitution that details the party’s core principles, organizational structure, membership requirements, and internal procedures.

Additionally, selecting a unique name and symbol is crucial; they should be original and not resemble those of other parties to prevent any potential confusion.

“Apply the ORPP to reserve the party name, abbreviation, and symbol. This step ensures that no other party can use the same identifiers. The application should include the proposed name and abbreviation, party symbol, party colors, and a non-refundable fee as specified by the ORPP,” the Registrar of Political Parties stated.

Once the party name and symbol have been secured, the next step is to provide detailed information about the party.

This entails submitting a thorough document outlining the party’s constitution, which should address membership criteria, leadership structures, decision-making processes, and mechanisms for resolving disputes.

You must also provide the details of office bearers, including their names, addresses, and identification information of the interim officials.

Additionally, a list of no fewer than 1,000 members from each of Kenya’s 24 counties, along with their national identification numbers and signatures, is required. Also, include information about the party’s headquarters, which must be a physical office address.

Once all required documents are prepared, apply for provisional registration to the ORPP.

The application must include the party constitution, details of office bearers, membership list, and proof of payment for the registration fee.

The ORPP will assess the application to ensure it aligns with the Political Parties Act.

If the application meets all criteria, the party will be issued a certificate of provisional registration.

Following provisional registration, the party must fulfill additional requirements within 180 days to obtain full registration.

“This involves holding a national governing body meeting to adopt the party constitution and elect officials, submitting evidence of compliance with the requirements for full registration, and demonstrating the party’s presence and activities in at least 24 counties,” the procedure read in part.

Once these requirements are met, the ORPP will provide a full registration certificate, formally acknowledging the party’s eligibility to take part in elections.

For Gen Z individuals aiming to start a political party, consulting with legal professionals is key, as understanding the legal and regulatory landscape can be challenging.

Creating a wide-ranging membership base is important, as there is a need for a significant number of members across various counties.
