Ex-Governors Face Graft Charges: EACC Targets Waititu, Lenolkulal, Sonko
On Sunday, May 12, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) disclosed that the former Governors of Samburu, Kiambu, and Nairobi – Moses Lenolkulal Kesaine, Ferdinand Waititu, and Mike Mbuvi Sonko respectively – will have corruption cases brought up in the upcoming week.
Waititu, among a group of 13 others, is scheduled to appear in court, facing charges of conflict of interest and abuse of office.
Additionally, they will address allegations concerning dealings with suspicious property.
Waititu is specifically accused of receiving Ksh25 million during his tenure as governor in connection with payments to a contractor for a tender awarded by the Kiambu County Government.
In Lenolkulal’s situation, the former county leader, along with 13 others, faces accusations of conspiracy to commit corruption, abuse of office, and conflict of interest. Reports indicate that the allegations involve the illicit payment of Ksh84.8 million for fuel supplied to the Samburu County Government by a company associated with Kesaine.

Sonko, along with three others, will also have their case mentioned, concerning purported past transactions during Sonko’s time as Nairobi Governor.
The former governor, under scrutiny, is charged with conflict of interest during his tenure as county head.
The charges against him point to the misappropriation of Ksh24.1 million in public funds from the Nairobi City County Government.
Among other governors under EACC scrutiny are Wycliffe Oparanya of Kakamega and Mwangi wa Iria of Murang’a.
The governors contend that the cases against them are politically driven.
In contrast, Twalib Mbarak, the CEO of EACC, has emphasized the institution’s commitment to recovering all misappropriated public funds, regardless of the stature of the accused individuals.
