DP Gachagua Survives Assassination Attempt on Staff Amidst Rising Political Tensions

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua disclosed on Sunday night that one of his employees was the target of an attempted assassination by unidentified gunmen.

During a roundtable interview with vernacular stations in the Mt Kenya Region, the DP shared that the victim was shot in the shoulder, sustaining an injury.

He explained that a lone gunman on a motorbike intended to shoot the staff member in the head, but a quick reaction saved the individual’s life.

Gachagua revealed that the employee, formerly part of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), had been transferred to his office to assist in the fight against illicit brew.

“In an attempt to instill fear, as the officer was leaving his Kileleshwa home, a motorbike rider shot at him, but the bullet missed his head and struck his shoulder. He spent a week in a Nairobi hospital where the bullet was removed,” Gachagua stated.

The DP also mentioned that President William Ruto was unaware of the assassination attempt until Gachagua informed him. Despite reporting the incident, the perpetrators have not been apprehended.

“When 13 officers were dismissed from NIS and reassigned to ministries, I recruited one of them, a senior figure in Nairobi, to aid in combating illicit brews,” he explained.

“The President was not aware; I informed him. When questioned, the suspects gave evasive answers. To date, the motorbike assailants remain at large,” Gachagua added.

In recent months, the deputy president has faced criticism from some leaders who accuse him of engaging in tribal politics by advocating for the one man, one vote, one shilling policy.

In June, Gachagua criticized NIS boss Noordin Haji for failing to provide timely reports, leaving the government unprepared for the anti-Finance Bill protests.

Following this, several leaders, particularly from Northern Kenya, demanded his resignation for allegedly sidelining the NIS boss.

In response, Gachagua asserted his commitment to the current government and refused to be pushed out of President William Ruto’s administration.

He urged leaders, especially from Northern Kenya, to support the government without calling for his removal. Despite facing an impeachment motion, Gachagua insists he has not been officially informed about it.
