CS Kindiki Unveils Aggressive Strategy to Combat Mungiki Resurgence and Religious Extremism
Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for the Interior, has issued a stern warning to criminals who use culture and tradition as an excuse to commit illegal acts, adding that his ministry has observed a resurgence of the illegal Mungiki sect in Central Kenya over the past few months.
Wednesday, when he unveiled the accountability report for the Interior Ministry, Kindiki stated that there has been an increase in cultural extremism, particularly in Central and Eastern Kenya.
“We witnessed them chanting outside the DCI when we arrested a suspect (Maina Njenga), and their courage and demeanor are evident. “I reiterate that anyone who believes we can return to the time when terror groups hid behind culture and raped, murdered, and extorted our citizens is mistaken,” he said.
“Those who recruit naive youths to join proscribed organizations are Kenya’s enemies, and for Kenya’s sake, we will come after you and eliminate you. Despite my desire to decongest prisons, I have space for dangerous criminals.”
The administration of Kenya Kwanza remains committed to combating religious extremism, such as the Shakola massacre, he added.
“Religious teachings will not protect you from the jaws of justice, all you religious leaders who may be involved in criminal activity and are hiding behind religious texts. When we finish with Paul Mackenzie, you will be our next example.”

The CS added that he is confident that security agents in Shakahola will discover additional mass graves in the region.
“We will begin excavating these graves on Monday after the current phase of autopsies on the last group of bodies concludes at the end of the week,” he said.
Kindiki continued by stating that the government has eradicated criminal elements from six North Rift counties that the state had initially designated as bandit-prone, troubled, and dangerous in March. Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwt, Baringo, Laikipia, and Samburu are the counties.
“Because some of the criminals escaped and blended in with the general populace, there have been sporadic banditry attacks against livestock. “However, unlike in the past, these incidents are not occurring in grazing areas,” he explained.
“Law enforcement officers cannot be everywhere, but we have made significant strides in recovering stolen livestock whenever there have been attacks.”
The CS added that the government has intensified disarmament efforts in the aforementioned regions and that the State has recovered approximately 200 firearms in the North Rift.
“Anyone possessing an illegal firearm in Kenya must voluntarily surrender it to the government, or we will use force to recover it,” stated the Interior CS.
Kindiki stated that the government is exploring long-term solutions to end banditry attacks in the North Rift, while also praising officers who assisted in the disarmament process.

“The permanent solution is to provide water points for animals to prevent unnecessary migration, but we will also open up the northern region of Kenya with infrastructure development and social amenities such as roads and hospitals.” This is now a security issue, not a development issue,” he said.
“The future economic stability of Kenya depends on our securitizing large portions of our country that remain insecure and cannot, therefore, attract local and foreign investment.”
According to Kindiki, the Kenya Kwanza government has also initiated operations to end the trade, production, and consumption of illicit and toxic alcoholic beverages, narcotics, and psychotropic substances, a problem that ranks third among the government’s most pressing national security threats.
