Christina Shusho Drops ‘Zakayo’ Teaser, Sends Kenyans into Frenzy
Tanzanian superstar gospel musician Christina Shusho is back with another song that is already showing signs of going viral in Kenya.
Titled Zakayo after Zacchaeus the tax collector from Luke chapter 19 in the Bible, Ms Shusho teased the song’s release on social media on 22 April 2024.
Sung in Swahili (and loosely translated into English), she sings, “There was once a man named Zakayo, a senior tax collector and a wealthy man. He wanted to know what kind of man Jesus was, but he couldn’t because…”.
The song has already received thousands of reactions on social media, although the release date has not yet been announced.
However, Kenyans are already having a field day with the title alone – “begging” Ms Shusho to use President William Ruto’s pictures as the song’s cover.
This is because President Ruto is infamously nicknamed Zakayo for introducing a new wave of taxes and increasing existing ones.
Since he took power, the cost of living in Kenya has become unbearable for those living below the poverty line.
Commodities such as fuel and petroleum products, electricity, food, and the cost of public transport have increased significantly. Taxes have also affected the cost of housing, education, and health as bills continue to rise.
“I don’t care if people call me names. I will continue to do what is right for our country regardless of the names people call me, including Zakayo,” said President Ruto, acknowledging his infamous nickname.

Ms Shusho’s fans continue to eagerly await the Zakayo song and it remains to be seen how Kenyans will respond to the song if her social media reactions are anything to go by.
Three years ago, Shusho released her song Shusha Nyavu (Cast Your Nets). The song is based on Luke 5:4-6, where Jesus was teaching on the Sea of Galilee from a boat owned by Simon Peter.
During his teaching, Jesus told Simon to cast out his nets for a great catch, after the fisherman had spent the previous night toiling on the lake without catching any fish.
“4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Go out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch. 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we have toiled all night and taken nothing. But at your word, I will let down the nets”. 6 And when they had done so, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets broke,” says the Bible.
Ms Shusho went on to win over the Christian faithful with this song, especially in Kenya where her presence was demanded – via a vibrant and aggressive uncoordinated social media campaign by netizens – to come and perform on New Year’s Eve. The event was a huge success after top Kenyan comedian Mwalimu Churchill heeded the call of Kenyans and flew Ms Shusho to Kenya for the concert.
13 million views on YouTube later, Shusho shows no signs of slowing down.
