Chaos Erupts as MCAs Fight Inside County Assembly Over 2024/25 Budget Rejection(Video)

On Tuesday, July 30, Wajir County Assembly members caused a disruption by rejecting the proposed budget for the 2024/25 financial year.

In footage shared by Gossipa2z.com, the disturbance began when the mace was introduced to start the session. Two male MCAs were seen leaping off tables and attacking the orderlies to seize the mace.

This led to chaos and a clash between the MCAs and the orderlies, with some MCAs fighting among themselves as the mace was taken outside the assembly.

As the MCAs continued their commotion outside with the mace, those supporting the budget were left arguing and shouting at each other.

Inside the assembly, another group of MCAs was shown overturning tables, tossing documents into the air, and chanting in their native language.

According to the MCAs’ official statement, the County Government had failed to decentralize crucial services that impact many residents.

The politicians also accused the government of not fulfilling its promises made during the campaign period.

The statement noted, “The 2010 Constitution makes it clear that sovereign power belongs to the people. Since being elected in 2022, the county assembly has approved nearly Ksh24 billion for two financial years,” adding, “Only about Ksh600 million reached the grassroots, while Ksh23.4 billion was misused within Wajir Town.”

The MCAs outlined their reasons for rejecting the budget, including a lack of adequate public participation and failure to incorporate public feedback.

They also claimed that in some areas, officials conducting public participation were chased away, leading to inequality.

Moreover, they contended that the budget was illegal because the fiscal strategy paper had not been submitted to the sectoral committees as required by standing orders.
