Blow for Masengeli’s Attempt to Apologise to Justice Mugambi as 6-Month Jail Term Set to Kick Off

Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli’s request to appear before Justice Lawrence Mugambi on Thursday was denied due to his involvement in another matter.

Masengeli, through his attorneys Steve Ogolla and Cecil Miller, had asked the court for permission to appear between 12 pm and 2 pm today, as his six-month sentence was set to begin on Friday.

The lawyers submitted their request to High Court Judge Chacha Mwita, who refused to grant the request for Masengeli to appear before Judge Mugambi for an apology.

Instead, Mwita instructed that the application be forwarded to Judge Mugambi on Friday for further instructions.

Consequently, Masengeli is scheduled to appear before Judge Mugambi tomorrow to discuss the potential suspension of his six-month prison sentence, following his conviction for repeatedly ignoring court summons.

All eyes will be on the court tomorrow to see how it addresses the case, given the significant criticism and condemnation it has faced from civil groups.

Masengeli’s difficulties increased when he withdrew the security officers assigned to protect Justice Mugambi, claiming they were recalled for advanced training.

“The two officers, being general duty officers, were recalled to attend VIP security courses,” Masengeli explained.

“We have ensured that adequate measures are in place to guarantee Hon. Mugambi’s security.”

Yesterday, Masengeli filed an appeal with the High Court, challenging a recent ruling that imposed a six-month prison sentence. He argued that the sentence was issued without considering his prior application.

Masengeli criticized Justice Lawrence Mugambi for sentencing him despite his previous statement to the court that the victims were not under police custody.

The Court of Appeal, however, rejected the request to suspend the prison term.
