Barasa Points Finger at Gachagua for Gen Z Parliament Invasion

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has pointed the finger at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for the Gen Z protesters’ invasion of parliament on July 25, 2024.

Addressing a crowd in Bungoma County on Saturday, July 27, 2024, Barasa noted that Gachagua’s persistent discussions about government shares had angered the youth, resulting in the parliament breach, which left several protesters dead and others injured.

“Maneno ya kuweka nchi kwa shares na kuleta ukabila, kwamba hii ndio sehemu iko na watu wengi ndio ipate maendeleo mengi, maneno kama hayo ndio ilifanya vijana wa Gen Z wakapandwa na mori wakakuja hadi kututafuta katika bunge la kitaifa,” Barasa said.

Loosely translates to:

“The talks about shares (by DP Gachagua and inflammatory remarks about the one man, one shilling one vote which proposes that development should follow population are what infuriated the Gen Zs to storm parliament looking for us.”

During a public speech with National Assembly speaker Moses Wetang’ula present, Barasa accused Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga of being Gachagua’s spokesperson, perpetuating what he termed as divisive comments.

Elected under the UDA party, Barasa criticized Gachagua, further complicating his efforts to unify the party’s elected officials and the Mount Kenya region leaders.

Barasa on ODM CS nominees

Barasa commended Ruto for collaborating with opposition party politicians, noting it was time for the Kenya Kwanza government to observe how ODM chairman John Mbadi would generate revenue without raising taxes.

On June 25, 2024, the opposition coalition party voted against the contentious Finance Bill 2024, with party leaders urging the government to find alternative revenue generation methods.

Subsequent protests resulted in the deaths of at least 60 people nationwide, as reported by human rights organizations.

Prominent leaders in the UDA party have openly opposed Gachagua’s one man, one shilling, one vote agenda, labeling it as divisive.

Political analysts recently pointed out that Gachagua is becoming increasingly isolated from the government after President William Ruto decided to collaborate with key leaders of the opposition party ODM.

Ruto appointed Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi as CS Energy and Petroleum, Hassan Joho as CS Mining, ODM chairman John Mbadi as CS Treasury and National Planning, and Wycliffe Oparanya as CS Cooperatives.

This development comes nearly two years after Gachagua advised Ruto to handle the ODM party leader himself, fearing that an arrangement to include ODM in the Kenya Kwanza administration could be initiated.
