Azimio’s Assurance: No Handshake, Lower Living Costs
Monday, July 16th, Azimio la Umoja legislators maintained that their three-day demonstrations would continue despite pressure from Kenya Kwanza and religious organizations to cancel them.
The team led by the minority leader of the National Assembly, Opiyo Wandayi, stated in a statement that they would only abandon their planned mass action if President William Ruto reduced the cost of living before the demonstrations.
Wandayi was concerned that Kenya Kwanza was concentrating on countering the protests rather than resolving the issues raised by the Azimio team.
According to the coalition led by Raila Odinga, their Kenya Kwanza counterparts have been ordered to conduct counter-demonstrations in the areas where Azimio plans to hold demonstrations.
The opposition has urged its supporters to keep the peace during the demonstrations and to avoid engaging the hired youth who intend to disrupt their programs.
“We are aware that Kenya Kwanza legislators have resolved to work with the police to prevent further loss of life and property. We understand what this implies,” Wandayi asserted.
“This entails confronting protesters with members of the Operations Support Unit, whose mission is to maim and murder protesters, including Azimio leaders.”
Raila’s faction also claimed that administrators, including some from Azimio, were involved in the plot, threatening to take action against those who will finance the counter-protests.

However, several Kenyan Kwanza legislators have refuted Azimio’s claims, stating that the State House meeting was intended to strategize ways to safeguard Kenyans’ lives and property.
“We cannot allow our nation to decline in the Maandamo protests because of selfish leaders. Who told Raila Odinga that this nation begins and ends with him? Why does everything involve Raila Odinga?” Nelson Koech, a Belgut lawmaker, posed.
Regarding their ongoing plans to impeach Ruto, the team indicated that despite the obstacles they were experiencing, they were continuing to collect signatures.
“Our website has been attacked a thousand times. They have even tampered with our website to mislead our supporters, said Senator Edwin Sifuna of Nairobi.
“Do not cause injury to other Kenyans. We have never been this low before. We will not fight our fellow citizens.”
From Wednesday, July 19, to Friday, July 21, Azimio will conduct nationwide demonstrations.
