Anarchy Alert- Ex-Governor Kiraitu Murungi Sounds Alarm Over ‘Rebellious’ Gen Z Movement

Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has voiced his support for the rising political activism among young people in Kenya. However, he also cautioned them against completely rejecting leadership structures and political parties.

Speaking on Wednesday, March 5, Murungi acknowledged that the youth are making commendable efforts in pushing for change. However, he expressed concern about their decision to operate without leaders or political affiliations.

According to him, this approach might create instability in the countryโ€™s political scene.

“The youth are doing the right thing, but I have some reservations when they say they have no leaders and do not belong to any party. That can be dangerous because it may encourage disorder, which could bring negative political consequences,” he said.

His comments come at a time when young Kenyans are actively engaging in political discussions, mainly driven by frustrations over poor governance, corruption, and economic difficulties.

Many of them have distanced themselves from traditional political parties, instead choosing to focus on independent activism and grassroots movements.

A survey conducted by Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) in July 2024 revealed that 81 percent of Kenyans were in favor of the Gen Z protests.

According to the report, released on Thursday, July 18, 83 percent of young Kenyans aged between 18 and 24 supported the demonstrations. Additionally, 80 percent of Kenyans above 35 years also backed the movement.

The survey found that Nairobi had the highest percentage of support at 90 percent, followed by Nyanza and Central at 89 percent and 88 percent, respectively. The North Eastern region recorded 83 percent, Eastern had 81 percent, and the Coast region stood at 80 percent. Meanwhile, Western and Rift Valley had the lowest levels of support, at 79 percent and 73 percent, respectively.

TIFA noted that many young people feel disconnected from political parties and leadership. As a result, they have taken matters into their own hands, demanding change in a way that reflects their aspirations.

Their rejection of political parties and leadership structures shows their dissatisfaction with the current system. They want a new approach that genuinely represents their needs and interests.

The protests highlight their frustration and emphasize the urgent need for serious reforms. The government must respond effectively to these concerns to rebuild trust and address the challenges facing the people, TIFA stated.
