Azimio Opposes 5 Taxes Imposed on Kenyans After Summit
The Azimio la Umoja- One Kenya Coalition has expressed objections regarding five taxes levied on citizens of Kenya.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Summit, the primary decision-making body of the coalition, expressed its opposition to several taxes, asserting that the Kenya Kwanza government’s imposition of these taxes was detrimental to the country.
“On the state of the economy, the Summit maintains the view that the tax burden being borne by Kenyans is unreasonable and unsustainable. The Kenya Kwanza regime is failing the test of being caring and compassionate,” the statement read in part.
Some of the highlighted taxes include a 16 percent tax on petroleum products. The coalition continues to oppose this levy, a stance they took previously upon its introduction.
“We remain opposed to the housing tax and its colonial undertones that make it look like the infamous hut tax of the colonial era,” the coalition added.
Furthermore, Azimio expressed opposition towards not only the two taxes but also the elevated PAYE rates burdening Kenyan workers, the taxation of retiree pensions, and the proposal to tax farm produce.

The coalition emphasized its support for Kenyan farmers, who represent a significant portion of the population. They argued that compelling farmers to surrender 5% of their earnings for every 100 Kenyan shillings generated from their agricultural products was unjust and harsh.
Azimio expressed appreciation for the adoption of the NADCO report and urged for its swift execution, cautioning against any attempts by members of the Kenya Kwanza coalition to undermine its implementation.
“We express gratitude to Parliament for the adoption of the report that was a product of bipartisan consensus and wide public participation,” Azimio stated.
“We notify those forces that should any efforts to undermine or tamper with the report succeed, there will be a very heavy price to pay,” they warned.
The coalition leveled allegations against the Speakers of the National Assembly and the Senate for obstructing the NADCO report, calling on President William Ruto to step in and address the issue.
“Those leaders have demonstrated a determination to delay, derail, or even kill the NADCO report, which is a negotiated document that pulled the country out of hostilities to the peace that obtains today. Nobody should take the present situation as a given or for granted,” Azimio noted.
