After Kenya, Adani Group Eyes Ksh116 Billion Deal in Tanzania

Adani Group has shown interest in investing in Tanzania’s power infrastructure, shortly after creating a stir over its planned investments in Kenya.

According to a Bloomberg report, Tanzania’s Public Private Partnership Centre received an expression of interest from the Adani Group to build high-voltage power lines in the country.

Davis Kafulila, the Executive Director of Tanzania’s Public Private Partnership Centre, stated that Adani Group submitted a $900 million (Ksh 116.14 billion) proposal aimed at modernizing the country’s electrical infrastructure.

This move highlights Adani’s expanding investment focus in East Africa, despite public protests.

Tanzania has already strengthened its business ties with the Indian conglomerate by awarding it a 30-year concession in May to operate the main container terminal at Dar es Salaam port.

Adani’s investment model caused controversy in Kenya when reports surfaced about its secretive dealings with the Kenyan government to take over management of the country’s busiest airport.

However, the investment proposal was halted after Kenyan Members of Parliament directed the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) on September 24 to stop further engagement due to the lack of transparency.

David Pkosing, Chairperson of the Parliament Committee on Transport and Pokot South MP, directed KAA to suspend the deal until investigations by his committee are concluded later this month.

Pkosing stated, “It is the advice of this committee that because we are going to order a special audit, you don’t do anything with Adani until this committee presents a report to parliament. If you do, it’s up to you.”

The directive followed joint engagements between the Senate and the National Assembly with key stakeholders who were believed to be involved in the Adani-Kenya deal.

Additionally, Adani is in discussions with the Kenyan government for a proposed $736 million (Ksh 94.9 billion) concession to construct high-voltage power lines.

These developments come amid allegations of money laundering against Adani Group in Switzerland—allegations the company has denied as it seeks to maintain its reputation.
