President William Ruto inaugurated the Kenya Navy KNS Shupavu ship on Saturday, July 29. The vessel had undergone a midlife refit by the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) at the Mombasa Shipyard.

The renovation project began in December 2021, shortly after former President Uhuru Kenyatta inaugurated the Mombasa yard.

KDF officers and technicians replaced the ship’s engine, electrical systems, generators, navigational equipment, and other essential onboard systems throughout the reconstruction process.

The KNS Shupavu was repainted, and the crew’s living quarters were renovated to increase their comfort. According to Kenya Shipyard, the refit was a significant undertaking that required expertise, collaboration, and commitment.

Upon a successful launch, the ship will be utilized for sea surveillance by the Kenyan Navy.

This is the first time Kenya has refitted a military vessel within its borders. Previously, the nation was required to transport its ships abroad for maintenance, incurring significant costs. The Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF) conserved 600 million shillings through a local refit process.

The KNS Shupavu has been a dedicated Navy asset since its 1996 commissioning. It has a bridge where the captain steers and a machine control center where operators closely monitor the performance of the warship.

Onboard the KNS Shupavu, essential infrastructure includes the primary galley, which contains a kitchen for preparing crew meals.

The primary engine chamber, which is responsible for powering and propelling the warship, is another crucial location.

The Engine Control Room (ECR) is located on the main deck’s aft level. It contains the main switchboard and the ship’s service switchboard for controlling and distributing the electrical power produced and used on a ship,” the Shipyard explained.

At the top of the KNS Shupavu’s weather dock, a crane is situated.

The crane’s principal function is to lift boats. Two vessels are also stationed on the ship’s deck. These vessels play a crucial role in assisting navy officers during operations and assignments.
