Karua Dismisses Ichung’wah’s Bi-Partisan Talks, Clash Looms

Martha Karua, the leader of the Kenyan NARC, has rejected a putative joint statement by the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio La Umoja Coalitions outlining key issues to be discussed in upcoming talks to be led by Nigeria’s former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Ichung’wah’s statement indicated that both coalitions had agreed on five key issues to be discussed during the negotiations.

On the statement, however, Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi’s signature was conspicuously absent, raising questions as to whether both parties were involved in its creation as claimed.

In apparent affirmation that the issues were not agreed upon by both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio, Karua stated that the absence of Opiyo Wandayi’s signature indicates that only Kenya Kwanza agreed to the issues.
She maintained that Azimio’s primary objectives remain unchanged.

“Where do you see Azimio’s signature?” Karua assumed a posture.

“A catalog of desires by Kenya Kwanza. “Azimio Kenya issues remain unchanged, and the cost of living is a top concern,” Karua said.

In a purported joint statement released on Saturday, the two parties reportedly agreed to establish a ten-member committee to guide the negotiations, with five members from each side.

They referred to it as a collective resolve to resolve their differences amicably for the good of Kenyans.

“The committee shall consider the following five issues: reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), implementation of the two-thirds gender rule, entrenchment of the constituency development fund, establishment and entrenchment of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, and embedding of the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary.”

The committee will consist of four members from outside of Parliament, two from each side, the leaders of the National Assembly’s majority and minority, and four additional Members of Parliament, two from each side.
