Tragic Discovery: Student Found Dead in Mara River Amid School Unrest
The body of a Kajiunduthi Secondary School student was discovered in the Mara River in Tharaka Nithi County on Tuesday, July 25. The students had gone on strike around 9 p.m. on Monday.
Students were reportedly forced to flee to a nearby river after police arrived to suppress the protest which caused them to become embroiled in the disturbance. Several of the pupils sustained serious injuries, and one died.
Physical wounds on the student’s body suggested that he was involved in a fight before his untimely demise.
The student’s body was transported to the Chuka Referral Hospital Mortuary pending an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his passing.
According to a parent who was present at the scene, the strike was precipitated by escalating tensions between the administration and students over alleged mismanagement, which allegedly led to a decline in academic performance.

He asserted that the principal was addressing the pupils before the outbreak of chaos. The Muthambi Sub-County Police Station promptly dispatched officers to the institution to quell the protests.
To disperse the students, tear gas canisters were launched shortly thereafter. Locals also reported hearing gunshots, which prompted the students to flee to neighboring villages for protection.
The tragic event sent shivers down the spines of the parents who camped outside the school’s main entrance after the administration and police denied them entry.
“After hearing about the incident, we learned the location of our children. Due to the commotion, some of them have incurred injuries and torn their uniforms,’ the parent said.
“It is also distressing to discover that one of the students perished. We have yet to identify the student’s parents,” lamented one of the parents.
The parents condemned the murder of their child and criticized the police for using excessive force. In addition, they demanded an investigation to determine the true cause of the student’s demise.
