Raila’s Next Move: Navigating Security Shifts
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s political efforts entered uncharted territory when President William Ruto’s administration withdrew his security in response to intensified protests.
Raila, who is legally entitled to round-the-clock specialized police protection, had his protection revoked after the government took drastic measures to rein in opposition leaders who have continued to stage mass demonstrations despite threats from President William Ruto and senior government officials.
At a press conference held in Nairobi on Tuesday, July 18th, Martha Karua, the leader of Narc Kenya, affirmed that anti-government protests would continue as planned despite the removal of state security attached to opposition politicians.
Security analysts weighed in on the matter and outlined a variety of options that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader could consider to remain secure during the demonstrations.
Dr. Mustafa Ali emphasized that Raila is currently protected by his capable private security personnel, a typical alternative for prominent individuals who no longer receive government protection.
Ali stated that Raila can utilize the various services provided by private security firms, such as surveillance, communication monitoring, and armed protection services.

However, Dr. Ali also suggested that Raila consider bolstering his existing personal security with individuals who have previously served at the highest levels of government.
“Raila has a lengthy history of political activism and has in the past been the victim of violence. Ali explained that he should consider hiring a team of security guards who are already familiar with his requirements and security protocols.
Separately, another Security Analyst, retired police officer Weke Okello, explained that the withdrawal of Raila’s security is intended to intimidate the Azimio la Umoja coalition and gauge the national sentiment.
Weke advised Raila to consider implementing varying levels of security, particularly in public areas. Until he can be certain of his safety, he suggested that the ODM Party Leader should even avoid dangerous areas.
If Raila believes that his current domicile is no longer secure, he could relocate to a safer location. This could be a private home, a government complex, or a foreign embassy.
“He could decrease his public activities as well. This would restrict his travel, public appearances such as anti-government protests, and social media presence,” Weke explained.
Weke noted, however, that there is no universal security solution for Raila.
The best option for him will depend on several factors, such as the level of danger he encounters, his personal preferences, and his financial resources.
