64 Year-Old MCA Who Expected an E in KCSE Celebrates With Community After Getting a D-

David Kimeli Leting, a 64-year-old MCA from Kipkenyo Ward in Eldoret, is making headlines for hosting a party to celebrate his unexpected success in the 2023 KCSE exams. Popularly known as Kokwas, the polygamist with five wives initially anticipated scoring an E grade but managed to achieve a D-.

Kokwas, who sat for the exams as a private candidate, revealed that he had no formal preparation and expected the lowest grade. โ€œThe exams were tough, and I thought Iโ€™d get an E, but I thank God I achieved a D-, which is a significant accomplishment for me,โ€ he said during the celebration.ย ย

In the results, Kokwas scored E in most subjects but earned higher grades in Kiswahili (D-), Biology (C-), and CRE (D-). He had previously completed his KCPE exams with 150 marks and later decided to pursue the secondary-level KCSE exams for personal growth.

โ€œI didnโ€™t attend any classes. When it was time for the exams, I simply informed my family and went to sit for them,โ€ he shared. Despite his minimal preparation, Kokwas considers the results a major milestone and a step toward further education.

The MCA now plans to pursue a diploma in political science at a local university. While he intends to study online and attend exams, he has already approached the institution to initiate the process. His decision to further his education was inspired by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, who earned a PhD two years ago.

โ€œIf the governor has a PhD, I can also pursue some academic qualifications,โ€ Kokwas said, adding that leadership is more about service than academic credentials. โ€œIโ€™ve been elected because of my work, not my papers.โ€

Residents of Kipkenyo have expressed their support for Kokwas, citing his impactful leadership. James Maina, a resident, praised him for initiating key projects like ECD schools, Kipkaren Vocational Institute, and Kipkenyo Secondary School.

Wamboi Muthoni, another resident, said they are proud of Kokwas and would support his academic journey and even re-elect him.ย ย

Kokwas emphasized his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promises while remaining a staunch advocate for education. โ€œI want to serve my people better. Now that I have my KCPE and KCSE certificates, I can speak better English at the county assembly and other forums,โ€ he noted.

Despite dropping out of nursery school in the 1970s, Kokwas has become a passionate supporter of education, ensuring all his children attend schools and colleges. โ€œIโ€™m a staunch Christian and believe God has guided me to this success,โ€ he concluded.
